The Surprising Plastic Surgery Trend of 2016

From on-demand Botox to non-invasive neck lifts, the future of cosmetic enhancement is all about efficiency

Written by Kaitlyn Frey

Getting a blowout on-demand is so 2015. This year, it’s all about the Botox concierge. One company in particular, Refined Aesthetics, is making the quick-fix cosmetic procedure easier than ever before by offering at-home appointments for those who can’t squeeze in a traditional trip to the doctor. The service is just one example of a growing trend. With jam-packed schedules and busy lives, undergoing an invasive procedure with a long recovery time—or even carving out a few hours for a pre-surgery consultation—isn’t ideal. Luckily, fancy futuristic technology and a slew of new treatments are giving way to ultra-convenient cosmetic enhancements. (Lunchtime neck lift, anyone?)

Check out four companies that are changing the face of plastic surgery.

Zwivel

If you’ve been considering a cosmetic procedure, but haven’t had the time to find the perfect doctor, that’s where Zwivel comes in. The app, co-founded by Gary Breslow, a board-certified plastic surgeon, offers virtual consultations with cosmetic doctors. The traditional consultation process can be incredibly tedious for both doctors and patients, says Breslow, and still, more than 60 percent of consultations don’t even result in the procedure being performed.

“It basically gives patients a ‘pre-consultation,’ where they can search for multiple doctors, indicate any concerns or desired procedures, and upload videos and pictures of problem-areas,” Breslow says. “The doctor will give the user feedback, estimated fees, and recommendations.” The personalized, virtual feedback makes taking the plunge into a cosmetic procedure that much easier and convenient.

ClearLift

Thanks to its skin rejuvenating, laser technology, ClearLift promises results similar to a neck lift without the long recovery time. The non-invasive (and painless) procedure takes no longer than ten minutes. And the results are immediate. “It’s perfect for people who don’t need a full neck lift, but have wrinkly skin around the neck that could use some tightening,” says plastic surgeon Robert Schwarcz M.D., who invested in the technology for his New York City office. “People will come in during their lunchtime, go back to work, and no one will be the wiser they had anything done.”

Refined Aesthetics

This upscale service, created by neurologist Daniel Ahoubim M.D., caters to your cosmetic needs anywhere, whether it’s in your home or office. “To a certain extent people want a level of privacy. Some people don’t want to necessarily be seen coming out of a waiting room after injections,” Ahoubim says. “And others just don’t have the time to come into an office. So getting these services done concierge-style has become more popular.” As of now, Refined Aesthetics offers Botox, dermal fillers, platelet rich plasma injections, and other non-invasive treatments in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Ahoubim is working on recruiting doctors across the country, so anyone can get personal, private cosmetic treatments, no matter where they live.

ThermiSmooth

Thermismooth—a technology that promises to smooth and tighten skin—involves swiping a pen-like device in circular motions across target areas. The skin’s tissue is heated, causing its collagen to reform and elastin to strengthen. Sessions typically last between 15 and 30 minutes and the technology can be used anywhere on the body—from the face and neck, to the thighs and arms. The best part? It feels like a hot stone massage.

Gigi Shaker, medical esthetician at Z. Paul Lorenc Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, has patients stop by not only to smooth their skin, but also for Thermismooth’s relaxing element. “So many clients close their eyes and fall asleep during the treatment because it’s so relaxing,” she says. “I love when that happens. Where in Manhattan can you go for a half hour and fall asleep?”
